Campus Honors

  • Alexander Prize
    Named for former UT president and now US Senator Lamar Alexander and his wife, Honey, to recognize superior teaching and distinguished scholarship.
  • Alumni Outstanding Teacher Awards
    Given by the UT Alumni Association to recognize teaching excellence.
  • Alumni Public Service Award
    Honors a faculty or staff member whose work has made a significant impact on the Knoxville-area community.
  • Angie Warren Perkins Award
    Named for the first dean of women at UT, this award honors outstanding leadership in campus governance or administration at the level of department head, director, or below.
  • Dr. Marva Rudolph Diversity and Inter-Culturalism Unit Excellence Award
    Recognizes an office, program, or department that has demonstrated outstanding leadership and made consistent contributions to advancing diversity and inclusion at UT. The office, program, or department receiving this award will have implemented diversity and inclusion initiatives that are linked to their mission and are sustainable.
  • Excellence in Academic Outreach
    Honors those who exemplify UT’s land-grant mission by using intellectual capital to benefit the citizens of Tennessee.
  • Excellence in Advising
    Bestowed by the Office of the Chancellor and the Teaching Council of the Faculty Senate to honor outstanding work in advising.
  • Excellence in Teaching
    Bestowed by the Office of the Chancellor and the Teaching Council of the Faculty Senate to honor outstanding work in the classroom.
  • Gene Mitchell Gray Pioneer Award
    Honors a student for work in promoting cultural diversity and enrichment on campus.
  • Hardy Liston Jr. Symbol of Hope Award
    Honors a faculty member, staff member, or friend of the university who demonstrates a commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.
  • Jefferson Prize
    Honors a tenured or tenure-track faculty member for significant contributions through research and creative activity.
  • Jimmy and Ileen Cheek Graduate Student Medal of Excellence
    Awarded annually to an outstanding student currently pursuing a PhD who has completed at least four semesters of study.
  • L.R. Hesler Award
    Established by students, colleagues, and friends of the longtime head of the botany department and former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to reward exceptional teaching and service.
  • LGBT Advocate Award
    Recognizes a faculty member, staff member, or student who demonstrates a commitment to advancing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues on campus.
  • LGBT Student Leadership Award
    Given by the Commission for LGBT People; recognizes a student who demonstrates a commitment to advancing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues on campus.
  • Macebearer
    The highest faculty award, which celebrates and honors a distinguished career and a solid commitment to students, scholarship, and society.
  • Notable UT Woman Award
    Recognizes a female faculty member, staff member, student, or alumna whose accomplishments bring great distinction to the university.
  • Ready for the World Award
    Recognizes those who enhance the intercultural and international awareness of students and the campus community.
  • Research and Creative Achievement
    Given to senior faculty in recognition of excellence in research, scholarship, and creative achievement.
  • Research and Creative Achievement—Professional Promise
    Honors faculty members who are early in their careers for their excellence in research, scholarship, and creative achievement.
  • Success in Multidisciplinary Research Award
    Given to a team of faculty members in more than one academic college who have succeeded in gaining major external resources and recognition for multidisciplinary research.
  • Torchbearers
    The highest honor given to UT students, this distinction reminds all students that those who bear the Torch of Enlightenment shadow themselves to give light to others. Given to honor graduating seniors for academic excellence and service to the university and society at large.
  • Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year
    Honors a faculty member who has shown outstanding commitment to mentoring undergraduate research students.
  • Undergraduate Researcher of the Year
    Honors a junior or senior who has demonstrated excellence in undergraduate research through independent inquiry, classes, and student employment.
