The Extraordinary Community Service (faculty or staff) award rewards a faculty or staff member who exhibits the Volunteer spirit in the community.

Alex MillerA 30-year member of the UT faculty, Alex Miller holds the William B. Stokely Chair in Management in the Haslam College of Business. He led the college’s effort to become a center of excellence in support of national defense. Now in its 16th year, the college’s Aerospace and Defense MBA program has graduated 400 students. Miller has also led efforts that have benefited the local community. In his Learning by Giving service–learning course, he partners business students with nonprofit leaders to raise thousands of dollars to benefit local charities. Miller also founded the Consortium for Social Enterprise Effectiveness and serves as the consortium’s Pro2Serve Director, raising $300,000 in scholarships for local nonprofit leaders to participate in a yearlong certificate program. He is the founding board chair for the Alliance for Better Nonprofits, a regional nonprofit support center that raised $2.5 million in its launch campaign.
